Department of Housing Announces Major Historic Land Sale in Sydney City CBD

public sale of historic buildings in Sydney's best areas

Many historic buildings like these will soon be released for sale to the public

I was recently taken on an exclusive tour to preview some of Sydney’s most iconic properties that will soon hit the market for sale. The Department of Housing has confirmed it will be selling almost 300 public housing properties in some of the most amazing locations in our city including The Rocks, Millers Point and Walsh Bay.

Alongside a journalist for the Sunday Telegraph and a representative of the Housing Department, I was lucky enough to get a taste for what will be on offer in the very near future – it was mind-blowing! I have such a deep passion for the Sydney city precinct and I am genuinely excited to know that one of the most lucrative land sales Australia has ever seen, featuring some of our most historic properties, will soon be up for grabs.

Sydney real estate ranges from apartments and terraces, through to free-standing houses in excess of 350sqm in size; all of which offer unique character, amazing space and natural light, in a fantastic location. Some even have iconic views. The historic properties that will be up for sale in The Rocks were built as far back as the 1800s and are a mix of Georgian era homes and Victoria Regency terraces. They truly are the heart and soul of this area and their history has played a part in creating our beautiful city’s inimitable culture. The harbour side apartments have more of a retro feel and are located in an iconic development that any Sydneysider will recognise if they have ever driven over the Sydney Harbour Bridge. This development was built and designed in the same era of The Sydney Opera House – offering the exact same, unique, late-modern architecture the world icon offers.

While this massive land sale is exciting and set to shake up the inner city property market, potential buyers must take into consideration a few important factors before taking the plunge to purchase.

Firstly, a love and respect for restoration of a heritage property is a must when buying into this precinct. Each property is completely unique, with some requiring minimal restoration, and others potentially running into hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of renovations. Secondly, you will need the time and patience to go through the process of employing both heritage experts and even an archaeologist for some of the properties’ restorations.

My tip for the the most popular and affordable entry into this market is in the Sirius Apartment development, offering much more affordable properties with minimal renovation required. The terraces and free-standing homes will have a much more extensive bill attached, including up to four years’ worth of love, sweat and tears. It’s a lengthy investment of both time and money but the end result is that you will own a part of Sydney’s history, in one of the best locations in Australia – Priceless!
